What is the "purpose of my life"? That is a question that LDS missionaries are told to ask potential converts. Since leaving the LDS church I have pondered that question deeply........ and I want to share with you that my purpose is so radically different than what I had learned as a Mormon! The Bible, God's word , tells us what our purpose is and "why" we were created by our Lord:
" For thou has created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created". Rev.5:11
" For all things were created by Him and FOR Him". Colossians 1:16
There is no doubt, the Lord God created me for wonderful purposes! He created me for HIS pleasure for HIM!
I have learned since coming to the Lord that we are here to glorify our God!!
The Lord told Moses just that :
" and in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to show in thee MY power, and that MY name may be declared throughout all the earth." Exodus 9:16
Jesus , the Son of God came to earth to fulfill His Father's will and what was that?
" For God so loved the world that whomsoever believeth on Him should not perish but have everlasting life". John 3:16
Jesus was "about" His father's work, and we should be to, and that work is to glorify our God!
" Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit". John 15:8
" Let your lights so shine before all men that they may see your good work and glorify your Father in Heaven". Matthew 5:16
Simply put, like Moses I am here on earth to glorify my God. Not to "earn" my glory or my exaltation , but to exalt the name of God above all others. That is my purpose!
Can I tell you something? That is so exciting!!!!
It's so exciting to be about "my father's work" ...... to be telling everyone how great and awesome a God I have........ to be "declaring HIS doings" among the people! Isaiah 12:4
I recently spoke with an LDS missionaries via http://www.mormon.org/ I asked "samuel" what the purpose of his life was? His response was: " to become like god" and one day receive exaltation.
Hmmmm........ I think that is the same "purpose" Lucifer had:
" O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut to the ground... for thou has said in thine heart I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God, I will sit also upon the mount of congregation ...... I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the most HIGH". Isaiah 14:12-15
Joseph Smith had the same vision of the purpose of life:
" ...and they shall pass by the angels, and the gods, which are set there, to their exaltation and glory in all things, as hath been sealed upon their heads, which glory shall be a fullness and continuation of the seeds forever and ever. Then shall they be gods, because they have no end, therefore shall they be from everlasting to everlasting, because they continue, then shall they be above all, because all things are subject unto them. Then shall they be gods, because they have all power and angels are subject to them." Doctrine & Covenants 132: 19 & 20.
That is exactly the vision that Lucifer had, he wanted to be "like the most high".
And you know where Lucifer will end up?
"Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit." Isaiah 14:15
Lucifer, the enemy, wanted to be like God. He wanted to receive exaltation too.
Oh my dear LDS readers, please please consider your lot before you.
God created you for HIS purposes - to glorify HIM!
The purpose of your life is not to become like "god" and to eventually receive your exaltation.
The purpose of our lives as believers is to exalt the name of the Lord not our own.
Oh my friends, my heart aches for you to understand.
You are in my prayers.
Meanwhile, I am thrilled to spend the rest of my life exalting the name of the Lamb, and glorifying my Father in Heaven!
Praising His Holy, Holy, Holy Name,
gloria

What that missionary said isn't exactly in conflict with all those biblical "purposes" you outlined.
ReplyDeleteHello, Seth. Thank you so much for taking time to visit my blog and for sharing your thoughts. I truly appreciate it.

I've found Mathew Chapter 7 to hold great teachings about how we live our life. I also think if there were six pages to live by they all would be found in the book of James. Best of luck in your studies.
